Making Your Home Fresh in January

I used to not love my house in January. The holiday decorations were put away and my house looked empty and sad. For the past three years I’ve been using January to pare down possessions and freshen my home with simple and affordable updates.

Begin by clearing out, followed by cleaning up.

Why keep anything you don’t use. This includes furniture, paint cans, garage clutter, Christmas decorations. Old towels can be given to your vet or groomer.

New Lamps and/or Shades

Do you have any “granny’s attic” lamp shades? If updating is what you’re after say good bye to them please. Let the experienced pros at Lamp Arts replace your old look with a fresh one.  Ballard Designs has a great guide to selecting the perfect lampshade, and has many affordable options.  Great deals on lamps can be also  be had at Lamps Plus,  Pottery Barn and even World Market, TJ Maxx and Target.

Pillows Instantly Update a Room

If your sofa is neutral, and I hope that it is, show a little personality with your pillows. They provide a pop of color and are the perfect opportunity to reflect current design trends without breaking the bank. Here is a guide to using throw pillows by Phoebe Howard. Splurge on these!

Fresh Florals: Orchids and Eucalyptus
If you miss the Christmas tree scent you had in December, replace it with eucalyptus. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods carry both the seeded and spiral varieties. The fresh scent can only be found in the spiral  (pictured below). Eucalyptus won’t take center stage but it will add a frosty hue to your environment, and infuse your home with a cool and refreshing smell. The seeded version has great texture and interest. I combine the two varieties and put them in a beautiful tall vase. If I am entertaining, I will add some white or chartreuse flowers. It’s the perfect antidote to winter doldrums.

How I love white orchids! I used to be intimidated by them until I found the perfect west-facing window in my house, and started buying them at Trader Joe’s. They last for months and add an elegant simplicity to your space.
