Multi-Task When Decorating for the Holidays

It’s coming! The time when we pull out the cornucopias, Christmas trees, angels, snowmen and wreaths. Why not let your decorating time also double as reorganizing time. De-cluttering the holiday collection is easier on the front end than in December when you are putting the decorations away.  When you’re running at holiday warp speed, it is easier to purge and move on than at the end of December when we are all tired and not relishing the chore of taking down all of the decorations.

Here’s how to make the most of your time:

  1. Start with a clear surface. Remove, clean and evaluate items which are currently in the place where you plan to decorate. Take a micro fiber cloth with you and dust as you go. See an area that could use a little purging? Go for it!
  2. Think simplicity. Fewer, larger items have more impact and have a cleaner look than many little items. Is it time to donate smaller pieces? What about excess serving ware and dishes? Do you really need duplicates of items in seasonal colors? Has your color palette changed?
  3. Cull and donate decorations that you no longer enjoy. There may be a family who would be grateful to have them.
  4. If you haven’t already done so, put your decorations in large, covered plastic boxes and label them accordingly. Organize now, and taking them down will take much less time than last year.

Need some ideas on where to donate your decorations?
