As time passes, we are learning more about the Braves mixed-use development in Cobb County. The first phase of the project, with a planned opening of 2017, has attracted the attention of large fashion and sporting goods retailers so much that there is already discussion of expanding the size of the first phase by 100,000 square feet or more.
The Circle 75 Parkway area just west of Interstate 285 pictured above in a rendering is the focus of all of the interest. Its location is close to the proposed pedestrian bridge to SunTrust Park.
The Braves hope to announce major leases in the new office tower early this year, and the hotel site will be finalized by the first quarter.
Very exciting news, but most people have questions on the traffic access and parking. SunTrust Park will be a smaller venue that Turner Field, seating 41,500 people. The Braves plan to own or lease at least 10,000 parking spots on and adjacent to the site by Opening Day of 2017. They also expect to have thousands of additional spaces within walking distance of the complex. The mixed-use nature of the area may also reduce traffic arrive on site.
There will be 17 different access points for SunTrust Park and the mixed-use development, including six from the east (Akers Mill, I-285, Interstate North Parkway, Terrell Mill Road, Windy Hill Road and Windy Ridge Parkway), five from the west (Cumberland Parkway, I-285, Spring Hill Parkway, Spring Road and Windy Hill Road), three from the south (Akers Mill, Cobb Parkway, I-75) and three from the north (Cobb Parkway, I-75 and Powers Ferry Road). Compare these to the current set up at Turner Field where there are only two.
So what does this mean to you if you live near the proposed development? I am coming around to the project and think that the benefits of an outstanding development outweigh traffice concerns and provide a much-needed boost to the activty, economy, and appeal of the Cumberland area.
